What to bring to apply

Bring the right documents the first time and start working faster. Here's what you need to apply and for the Form I-9 that every worker in the U.S. must complete. There's a printable checklist at the end.

The I-9 rule, in one line

You need one document from List A, OR one from List B plus one from List C. Most common: a driver's license + a Social Security card.

Below are the most common documents from each list. The full official list is at USCIS I-9 acceptable documents.

List A

Proves identity AND work authorization (one is enough)
  • U.S. passport or passport card
  • Permanent Resident Card / Green Card (Form I-551)
  • Employment Authorization Document (Form I-766)
  • Foreign passport with Form I-94 (certain cases)

List B

Proves your identity
  • Driver's license or state photo ID card
  • ID card issued by a federal, state, or local government
  • U.S. military card or draft record

  • Certified U.S. birth certificate
  • Certification of birth abroad (FS-240, FS-545, DS-1350)

Documents FAQ

Common questions

What ID do I need to start working?
For Form I-9, you need ONE document from List A (like a U.S. passport or Green Card), OR one document from List B (like a driver's license) PLUS one from List C (like a Social Security card or birth certificate). The most common combination is a driver's license plus a Social Security card.
Do I need my physical Social Security card?
For the I-9, an unrestricted Social Security card counts as a List C document, but it isn't the only option; a certified birth certificate also works. Either way, it's smart to know your number and have the document handy. Never send your number by text or unsecured email.
What if I lost a document?
You can request a replacement: your license at the DPS/DMV, your Social Security card at the Social Security office, and your birth certificate at your state's vital records office. Start early, replacements can take a few days.
