What you really need to know before spending money on a certification: how OSHA's rules work, what the OSHA 10/30 card is, where to train near you, and why the employer often certifies you at no cost.
There is no government “forklift license.” OSHA makes the employer responsible for training, evaluating, and certifying each operator, and that certification is specific to the type of equipment and the workplace. Per OSHA, certification has three parts:
Certification must be re-evaluated at least every 3 years, or sooner after an accident, a switch to a different type of truck, or a change in conditions. Official reference: OSHA 1910.178 and the OSHA training guide.
OSHA 10 (10 hours) and OSHA 30 (30 hours) are voluntary safety-awareness courses from OSHA's Outreach Training Program. They're taught by OSHA-authorized trainers, and the real credential is the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) card that arrives by mail. Many employers and job sites like to see OSHA 10, but it is not the same as forklift certification and, on its own, does not meet any specific OSHA requirement. More: OSHA Outreach Program.
