What comes out of your paycheck

Your gross pay is what you earn before anything is taken out. Your take-home (net) pay is what actually lands in your account. Three main things come out:

Because everyone’s W-4 and benefits are different, treat the income-tax lines as an estimate. Your first real paycheck is the true test, and if the numbers look off, your recruiter can help you understand your check. Curious what your wage is worth over a week, month, or year? Paycheck FAQ

Common questions

How do I estimate my take-home pay?
Start with your gross pay (hourly rate times hours, plus any overtime). Then subtract Social Security and Medicare (FICA, 7.65%), an estimate of federal income tax withholding, and any state income tax. What is left is your take-home, or net, pay. This calculator does that math for you.
How much is taken out of a paycheck?
For most hourly workers, FICA takes exactly 7.65% (6.2% Social Security + 1.45% Medicare). Federal income tax withholding depends on how much you earn and your W-4. State income tax depends on your state: Texas has no state income tax, and Louisiana uses a flat 3% rate for 2025. Altogether, many hourly workers take home roughly 78 to 88% of gross.
Is Texas or Louisiana better for take-home pay?
Texas has no state income tax, so a Texas paycheck keeps a little more than the same wage in a state that does tax income. Louisiana moved to a flat 3% individual income tax in 2025. This calculator lets you compare both.
Is this exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, not tax or payroll advice. Your real withholding depends on your Form W-4, benefits, and other factors, so your actual check may differ. FICA (7.65%) is exact; the income-tax pieces are estimates.
